Weekly Prep Thread 25 May - 31 May

Busy week at work, but managed to pick up 50 rounds M855 for a song. Vegetables are coming in strong, but have been eating them as fast as they come in. Will be firing up the canner this week for sure.

How are y'all doing?

Re: Weekly Prep Thread 25 May - 31 May

I think we're in good shape, but I also know it's a false sense of security. You're never really "ready", are you?

Anyway, with gas prices going up, I never come home from work without calling the missus..."You need me to pick up anything?" This results in at least one Wal-mart stop a week. I now use this stop to add to our "everyday" pantry. I pick up whatever I find that is on sale. It's suprising what an extra $20-30 per stop will add up to in a short time. Today it was 2 24-packs of TP, a 10-pack of soap, and two tubes of toothpaste.

No major purchases planned in the near future. Just keep plugging along, little by little...

I'm pretty much dedicatin' my weekend to preppin.

Been picking and planting veggies.
picked up:
50lbs of rice
30 lbs of pinto beans
couple of flats of canned veggies.
100rnds 7.62x39
100rnds .45
100rnds .40
40rnds .243

Researched what filter to purchase for a water filtration sys-"in the event"
gonna pull the trigger on that in the next few days

I did a COMPLETE inventory / rotation (and had to throw a little bit out):banghead:
of all my stored food.

Most exciting part for me- we cleaned out 2 closets - My wife actually helped clean and reorganize so we've got some more storage space.:applause_
I'm so proud of her. It's great to finally have her as a partner in this.

and last but not least..
cuttin the chains that bind me.
gonna use the funds on preps and pay off a bit of debt

Tomorrow: china-Mart, Yard Work and clean out the Garage :confused_ma:

Nice looking boat there JJ. You know the saying about the two happiest days in a boat owners life.....

I sold my boat about 8 years ago, my motorcycle 6 years ago and my F250 and travel trailer 3 years ago. Life is ALOT simpler now. Live and learn!

Looks like your gonna save some $$ on storage too. Double bonus!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Stuff on boats tends to break when you use them, especially when inviting unseasoned people on your boat.

Then they tend to break when you DONT use them.

So you are damned if you do, and damned if you dont!

Bought a food dehydrator off eBay for my wife, well, I get to eat too. My first experience with eBay, actually buying anyway. Very satisfied.

Picked up one of those 10/22 Ruger Rifles from WallyWorld. Received my first gold coin in the mail along with another 4 ounces of silver.

Have 20 lbs of steaks coming in this week. Picked up another 30 lbs of dry food to can. Also another 200 rds of 9mm HP ammo.

I bought 2 of those kerosene lanterns at Wally World, 5 bucks each. Also, a gallon bottle of citronella oil, 6 bucks. Cheap outside light/mosquito repellent. I can't believe how much coleman fuel is now. When I was a kid, we would go camping pretty often. It was 25 cents a gallon back then. Now it's like 9 or 12 bucks a gallon.

It's an Equi*flow dehydrator. I was going to save the picture from eBay, but didn't. First thing we did was open the box and plug it in to test. The fan came on as soon as I adjusted the stat and in about a minute it was heating up. I had searched the net for this brand and could not find one except on places like eBay. The price, you ask? The bids were at $40 when i started and I keep going and finally placed my high bid at $76 but my winning bid was $71 plus a little over $17 for USPS to deliver it. So for $88.19 it was delivered to my door. The closet I could find to this size was an Excalibur Dehydratorfor $209.95! new. I was going to buy it until I found the Equi*Flow on eBay.

Boats? I've had a few and dreamed of others. Now I have a 14.5' w/9.9 4 stroke motor. It's easy on gas, quiet, slow for trolling and after a while it does get me to the fishing spots. Getting to the lake with the F250 4x4 pickup, not so cheap.

I, too got an older magic chef dehydrator from craigslist for $10.
Spent most of the weekend making shiitake logs and planting the garden.
Will be shotgun shopping this week.

That’s about right...
Maybe twenty dollar bills though
It’s mostly a death by a thousand cuts type deal

I picked up some water storage containers From WallyWerld as well
A Few of the Blue hard plastic and a few of the collapsible soft plastic containers.... they looked handy.

Also asked at the bakery about 5 gal buckets... Had a bit of a communication gap w/ the bakery workers:sarcasm:
It's a shame to say that I have to reach waaay back for a little Spanish... Maybe I should brush up?
-yeah right-

But all they wanted to do was have me talk to the manager:banghead:

I wasn't about to wait for a manager and then have him want my life history so I could score a few buckets:s15:

Nothing but the best and brightest work @ WallyMart you know...:sarc:

I bit the bullet and ordered buckets from beprepared.com dang are they pricey! 7.50 for a .090 bucket and gasketed lid. I couldn't find a better price for the .090 anywhere.

10 buckets, 75 bucks. GEEZ.

The hole depot buckets are .070 thickness. I opted for the heavier buckets after seeing how badly deformed the super pails from emergency essentials were from the few lb's of vacuum due to the oxy absorbers.

Make sure those lids are gasketed btw. The non-gasketed lids are NOT fully air tight.

Oh, and you will notice that I usually tend to over engineer the problem.

They are gasketed...

I suppose I'm operating under the assumption that I plan to seal several smaller bags.. gallon bags:D.. Per 5 gal bucket. -

I know its not the most efficient use of space. But IMO - it could potentially be more efficient use of the food I intend to keep fresh... I don't want to waste any when I open a big bag... So I was thinking I'd toss a couple small O2 absorbers in the bucket for good measure- but not enough to pull a crazy hard vacum.

That is what I was planning to do as well. But heck, now I have to go check out HD. I didnt see any gasketed ones when I was there. That will make life alot easier.

Hopefully we can get at least 4 of those 4 gal bags in there.
